INVESTMENT TO MODERNIZE TELECOMMUNICATION SERVICE
AND BOOST LOCAL ECONOMIES
Government Expands And Improves Northeastern Telecommunications
POWASSAN – The Ontario government is boosting economic development opportunities by providing wireless broadband Internet service to communities in the districts of Nipissing, Parry Sound and Sudbury. Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), Rick Bartolucci, and Nipissing MPP Monique Smith, made the announcement today.
“The McGuinty government is pleased to help bring modern telecommunications technology to small northern communities,” Bartolucci said. “More than 115 small communities will benefit from this project, which will provide residents and businesses with access to services and opportunities that were previously unavailable to them.”
The NOHFC is providing $1 million to the Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation to construct wireless, open-access broadband infrastructure in the districts of Nipissing, Parry Sound and Sudbury. Broadband Internet services will be made available to areas that are currently without or have very limited access to high-speed broadband data communications.
“I am pleased that this technology is being made available to so many small communities in the region,” Smith said. “The addition of these services in Nipissing and neighbouring communities will allow local businesses to expand their operations and compete globally, resulting in new economic development opportunities.”
A refocused NOHFC is key to the government’s Northern Prosperity Plan for delivering real, positive change across the North. The plan has four pillars: Strengthening the North and its Communities; Listening to and Serving Northerners Better; Competing Globally; and Providing Opportunities for All.
